Thales has been present in the State of Qatar for over 35 years and provides its customers with technologically advanced solutions for the aerospace, transportation, defence and security domains. Thales today employs 230 people in the state of Qatar.

Historically, Thales has provided defence systems for the Qatar Armed Forces. Over the last few years, the Group has extended its footprint in various other areas including security for critical infrastructures, space, rail, air transportation and cybersecurity. Thales’ presence locally is continuously increasing, with the objective of serving the Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV2030).

Local cooperation

In Qatar, Thales is continuously developing its local cooperation for key programmes that the Group is involved in. Thales has decided to launch a Thales Innovation Hub in the country to further develop its expertise in cybersecurity and In-Flight Entertainment and Connectivity (IFEC).
  • In 2012, Thales and Qatar Airways jointly announced the opening of a technology research, development and training centre at the Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP). This laboratory currently houses state-of-the-art IFEC equipment that supports software and application prototyping, content integration, system level testing and training.
  • In 2013, Qatar University and Thales signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the academic development, research and training of future Qatari professionals. The aim is to increase the number of graduates and leverage Thales’ experience in technologies and services related to information systems. Within the framework of this MoU, Thales has already opened an academic Chair in Cybersecurity, which activities started in September 2016.
Regarding defence related matters, Thales has signed a MoU with the Qatar Armed Forces to assist in the development of an Optionally Piloted Vehicle – Aircraft (OPV-A). Thales also signed an agreement with HEC Paris to provide Executive MBA credits to the Qatar Armed Forces.
