Eco-design is an approach to the design of a product or service in which environmental responsibility is factored into every stage of the life cycle, starting at the earliest design phase.

Life cycle assessment

With stricter environmental regulations in the pipeline and growing demands from civil society, we need to think ahead. We analyse the environmental impact of our products throughout their life cycle, from the use of raw materials to manufacturing and distribution and end-of-life disposal or recycling.

Based on this analysis, we adjust our production, maintenance and decommissioning methods accordingly. We look for the most environmentally responsible solutions when developing new technologies — without compromising the high levels of security and reliability our products must achieve.

Examples of our eco-designed products
Our passive radars use signals from nearby radio and television antennas, limiting power consumption.
Our electrical motion system for helicopter simulators consumes less energy than a hydraulic system and avoids the pollution risks associated with hydraulic fluids.
Our GAIA-I laser consumes 20% less energy than a traditional laser thanks to the ingenuity of our research teams.


Driving innovation

Eco-design pushes us to be more creative and think outside the box. Whether it's replacing a polluting product, designing an energy-saving device, or making systems smaller, there are a thousand and one ways to reduce the environmental impact of our solutions. More than 22,500 research and development specialists all over the world are working to develop technologies and solutions with Thales's distinctive "Green Touch".

A team effort

We limit the environmental impact of our products and services not only at the design phase but in all of our activities. In our Group-wide reference system, environmental requirements are incorporated into all the relevant business processes:

  • bid and project management
  • serviceable condition maintenance of products
  • plant decommissioning.


Dedicated "product environmental managers" are responsible for ensuring compliance with these requirements.
